TikTok could soon let you pay and subscribe to your favorite creators
TikTok is rolling out subscriptions to allow creators to charge for content, and it’s not the only social media service doing so.
ICT Tac is working on a subscription tool for creators, with the news coming just a day after Meta announced that subscriptions are now available for a small group of Instagram creators, with plans to expand in the near future. TikTok has already implemented a tipping feature that allows users to send gifts to their favorite creators in the form of coins during live streams. However, tips are a volatile source of income, and one comment could be enough to close the doors to generous freebies from subscribers.
TikTok has recently taken steps to support a creator economy in an effort to take its e-commerce potential to the next level. To this effect, the company has launched a Creator Next program which allows creators to earn money with their content. Again, not everyone can fit into the program, making subscriptions one of the most stable forms of revenue in today’s online content space. The company also confirmed the news to Tech Crunch, adding that the subscription feature is currently being tested in a very limited capacity and is not widely available. When asked to shed more light on how it all works, TikTok provided a typical boilerplate answer about how it continues to strive to add more value and new experiences to users. The main purpose, however, remains the same as Instagram Followers and the Super Follow feature on Twitter. It’s all about helping creators pocket a steady income and earn a living from the short video platform.
The next big change for social media
While TikTok hasn’t shared any details on how subscriptions work, it’s highly likely that creators will be able to reserve exclusive content for their followers, resulting in a medium that fosters deeper engagement with more avid followers. , at a price. However, it is unclear how this exclusive content will be served. Whether it will appear on the algorithmically curated For You page with a blur or paywall warning, or whether it will only be displayed on the creator’s profile page.
